Have You Tried Coco Jelly At This Farm On ECR?
What Makes It Awesome
Gohulabalan is a magicIan. No, seriously. He is a gardener by day and a physician by night. Don’t believe us? Head to Sorrel Gardens, on East Coast Road and you’ll probably catch him planting a sapling.
Walk into the farm and get transported to Kerala, what with all the greenery at this one spot. Miniature gardens, bonsais, garden accessories, pots, handicrafts for the balcony, etc.
Pro-Tip
When at the farm, try their coco jelly, a refreshing and healthy dessert. The outer part of the coconut is shaved, the coconuts are then pre-opened and along with whole extracted coconut flesh, fresh coconut water is made into a jelly and then pre-chilled in the coconut itself. The jelly consistency is similar to tasting a tender palmyra fruit

He says, “I have been encouraging people to grow plants that are Chennai-friendly. We need to study each plant before we decide to grow them; each plant behaves differently and needs different methods of maintenance. While some plants do not need much sunlight, some others need good sunlight to grow. Some plants need shade and certain plants need very less water. It’s important that we understand these, before we zero in on the plants. Often, people complain that once they buy a beautiful plant and take it home, it withers away —it’s because they are not aware of the elements needed for the plant to grow and sustain in a healthy way.”

So, you might’ve tried champagne by the Seine, ouzo in the Greek Islands, a frothy cup of teh tank in Malaysia, but have you tried the coco jelly at Sorrel Gardens? Sitting on the lone hammock amidst the calm foliage at this particular farm on ECR, we help ourselves to spoonfuls of a refreshing part-water part-jelly dessert. And much like the Bermuda Triangle, the contents of this particular coco jelly are a great mystery. One that Dr. Gohulabalan doesn’t want to divulge. “It’s our secret recipe,” he laughs. His father, K. Thangaraj, tried something similar in Thailand, and was inspired to make it here. “It’s tender coconut water which we process naturally. Since it has no preservatives, the shelf life is only seven days,” he says. The coconuts are shaved and the jelly is chilled and served in them.

Why miniatures gardens in particular?
In a metropolitan city with maddening crowd, noise and pollution, land for city gardening is a scarce commodity where people hardly find a place to have their own garden. This is the current situation of people living in big cities. Many houses and apartments include a tiny porch, balcony, or patio where they likely to have few plants, but at times they become tough for them to maintain. Imagination, creativity and a pinch of time made me to get a mesmerizing unique garden. Every parcel open space is valued at a premium, and the competition for its use is fierce. If this thought comes to your mind, the apt choice is going to be unique miniature collections from Sorrel gardens.

Making a miniature garden is simple and can give your garden a new spin too. “All you need is the right choice of plants, some interesting accessories, the right color tones, and there you go — your miniature garden is ready,” says the doctor, who was more attentive in his botany classes than biology, back in school.
Being avid lovers of the cacti, the couple says that they plan to have a cacti farm soon. “We are coming up with a cacti farm and we plan to bring around 100 different varieties of cacti from around India. After which, we plan to import a few cacti varieties from around the world. Later, these would be sold at reasonable rates,” says Dr Gohulabalan.
